Daniel Doyle’s life is “hanging in the balance” after the fitness model was found without a pulse in his jail cell.
His girlfriend Shannen Reilly McGrath, of Love Island 2017 fame, has been left devastated by the medical emergency and has pleaded with her on/off ex to pull through.
Taking to Instagram as Doyle was rushed to intensive care, an emotional Shannen shared snaps of them kissing in bed.
“We have had our ups and downs but you can’t help who you fall in love with or who you love,” she wrote.
“I was back with him before this devastating news and I’d do anything in the world for him. I am praying he fights his way through this.
“He is a fighter and I know he can. We’ve too much planned and he’s too much to live for.”
Here’s all you need to know about her criminal beau.
Who is Daniel Doyle?
Daniel – known as Dano to his friends – is a nude fitness model and aspiring actor from Dublin, who appeared in the hit Irish drama Love/Hate.
He hit headlines in 2017 when his ex Shannen Reilly McGrath went into the Love Island villa to try and find a new boyfriend – but got dumped just days after she arrived on screen after a brief flirtation with Chris Hughes .
Daniel was later linked to Stephenie Davis in a rather incestuous love-square, after it was claimed her ex Jeremy McConnell had been ‘cheating’ on her with Shannen.
Stephanie and Daniel teamed up on Twitter to expose their exes, with Stephenie even branding Shannen a “homewrecker”.
Both Shannen and Jeremy denied any wrongdoing, but were spotted out on a boozy night out in Dublin later that year with a group of mates.
Dano, meanwhile, slammed Shannen as an “escort” and accused the dental nurse and model of sleeping with men for cash after she was caught in a set-up pap shoot with CJ Meeks – who was trying to get his own back on ex Bianca Gascoigne after she got with Jamie O’Hara in the Celebrity Big Brother house.
But Shannen denied the claims, telling the Daily Star: “It’s been absolutely mental.
“I was completely single and recently out of a relationship with a guy who has a big following on social media, as he’s bought a lot of them.”
She went on: “Obviously if he’s hurting and he wants to get his own back, then whatever.
“There was nothing romantic in it, nothing in it that way, [CJ’s] a lovely fella, but I’m still very much in love with my ex, but can’t go back.
“I stopped modelling for two years because my ex did not like it, so I’m trying to get back out there at the moment.”
Shannen added: “My ex-boyfriend got jealous. He made up claims about me, saying I’m something that I’m not.”
Soon enough though, Shannen and Daniel rekindled their romance.
Why is Daniel in jail?
Daniel was sentenced to two years in Mountjoy Prison in February 2018 after pleading guilty to possession of drugs for sale or supply at his home on November 12, 2014.
He was caught with hundreds of tablets confirmed to be MDMA stuffed into his pants, alongside drug paraphernalia including syringes and weighing scales at his home.
Thousands of euros in cash was also found at his address.
It was the second jail sentence for Doyle, who was thrown behind bars in 2007 for possession of cocaine and shotgun cartridges.
He has another 35 previous convictions, including two for threatening to kill or cause serious harm, and for unlawful possession of firearms in suspicious circumstances.
At his 2018 sentencing, the judge said Doyle was “clearly involved” in the drugs trade, but took the decision to suspend the second year of his sentence.
What happened to Daniel Doyle when he was found unresponsive in his cell?
Just after 8am on Friday June 15, prison officers opened the doors to Doyle’s cell and discovered his seemingly lifeless body.
He had no pulse until first aiders managed to revive him, and was rushed immediately to intensive care at the nearby Mater Hospital where doctors were able to reestablish his pulse.
A source told the Irish Mirror that Doyle’s life was “hanging in the balance” and there was no guarantee he would recover.
“When staff at Mountjoy opened the cells this morning they discovered Doyle unresponsive, he had no pulse,” said the insider.
“He was rushed to the nearby Mater Hospital were doctors managed to get a pulse back.
“His life currently hangs in the balance and only time will tell if he will pull through. Tests will have to be carried out to determine why he ended up in such a condition.”
It was thought Doyle may have ingested a mystery substance during the night. A second inmate, found unresponsive in a separate cell at the same time, was treated in hospital and sent back to jail.
